Beyond remixing the contraries

As a result of the Political Remix Video call that both EMBED and Doc Next Network started last December, the following selection of remixing works will be screened during the next ZEMOS98 Festival (14th April):

This Political Remix Video international call has received 124 audiovisual works in a month time. The selection committee has been formed by Felipe G. Gil and Pedro Jiménez de ZEMOS98, Joan Carles Martorell (Yerblues.net) y Alberto Tognazzi (Movil Film Fest).

This committee highlights the fact that all these works go beyond the simple technique of «remixing the contraries». They (together with Jonathan McIntosh at PoliticalRemixVideo.com) understand political remix videos as an audiovisual genre which puts into practice the «situationist detournement», using the media to criticize power structures, to deconstruct social myths and defy the mass-media via «re-cutting» and «re-framing». This remix is done from media fragments mixed with pop culture. Could this way of understanding audiovisual remix be a new kind of documentary? How are we going to access the collective memory if it’s already remixed? Aren’t the media using remix techniques as a sort of aesthetic of social reality? Let’s carry on researching into this path and learn from our community.

More than four hours a day on the internet

Young people are attached to their mobile phones… But do they still use landlines? Is online television as popular as ‘regular’ television? What is the most popular games console among today’s young people across Europe? And what are the biggest differences between European countries in terms of how they use media today?

The answers to these questions – and more – can be found in the first European-wide Youth Media Trend Report (2011-2011), which was commissioned by the Youth & Media Programme of the European Cultural Foundation (ECF).

The extensive research was carried out by the Belgian research centre Trendwolves, which looked at media use among young people aged between 15 and 25 in five European countries: Norway, the Netherlands, Spain, the United Kingdom and Croatia.

Researchers mapped how young people use media in each of these five countries, focusing specifically on social networks, internet, telephone, television, radio, newspapers, magazines and games.

The first Youth Media Trend Report of its kind identifies different media landscapes across Europe and represents an important step in measuring, observing and revealing changes in the way young people use their media.

With this research, ECF aims to provide broad access to exclusive data to cultural, political and media organisations and professionals working on youth and media policies and programmes. The research is designed to fill a gap for the cultural sector, which is often deprived from mere facts and figures, unlike the business sector, in which such research data are used for designing successful marketing strategies and forecasting trends.

Doc Next examines copylaw alternatives

On 21 and 22 February, Doc Next Network attended a workshop on intellectual property related to media and culture. This two-day workshop in London gave a comprehensive view of copyright law, so that we are able to understand why copyright exists and how it works.

Central issue how can copyright law serve the purposes, goals and needs of the participants and the Doc Next media collection.

Given the existing legal framework, we analysed the law to see what licences would be the best fit for our media collection. We focused on open licences like Creative Commons, to see why they were created and how they work. As a conclusion and practical outcome the workshop ended proposing, with the contribution of all the participants, we chose the legal tool that can best serve our goals.

During the workshop we encountered a void within the legal system considering copylaw: no legal tool fits so-called mashups or other derivative works. Workshop moderators Eva Sòria (historian) and Abel Garriga (attorney) took the challenge and will stay involved in Doc Next Networks quest for an alternative copyright / -left.

This year, the Association “e” is creating an alternative production studio, Young Creators CO-OP, in which we hope to provide good conditions for development for young creators. The studio will operate on the rule „from idea to realisation”, meaning that we want to see the project through all the way to post-production.

At “e”, we organise workshops, exhibitions, open screenings, portfolio reviews, we produce debut films and photographic projects (Poland.doc, Film Preschool, Photopresentations, Snapshots). In thinking about the modern media education professionalisation of cultural workers is vital for us, along with investing in young artists who can combine their artistic potential with a sense of social mission and share their skills with younger generations.

Along these theme, in 2011 we organised five multimedia workshops for young people with little experience in film and/or photography during the summer holidays. The theme of explorations in film and photographic workshops was “Local Hero”. In line with our plans a total of 5 short documentary forms were created: three photographic projects (photocasts) and two short film etudes. On the last day of the workshop during an official showcase each group presented its short documentary to a wide audience. The screenings attracted a lot of interest. In one of the towns where we held workshops, Kołbacz, almost entire town was present at the premiere (the film has been shown 4 times since).

We promote young documentary work in Poland and abroad. In 2012 we would like to continue our activities in this field with the almost entire town was presentecond edtion of Poland.doc, within the Doc Next Network.

Youth MODE Documentary Workshop in Izmir

MODE Istanbul will be organizing a creative documentary workshop in Izmir between January 30th and February 5th. The national applications are closing this Friday, the 13th of January.

Participants will be given seminars on creative documentary making, screenwriting, digital camera techniques and editing. They will shoot 5 minute documentaries on the theme of “Local Heroes of Izmir”. All documentaries completed during the workshop will be added to the Doc Next Network’s Media Collection.

The workshop will be held in collaboration with Bornova Municipality’s 4 Seasons 4 Colors Workshops and with the support of the universities in Izmir, mainly the Izmir Ekonomi University. All films made during the workshop will be showcased as part of the 4 Seasons 4 Colors Screening Event on Febuary 23rd .

IDFA, here we come!

Two young DIY media-makers from Turkey, Akile Nazli Kaya (31) and Selin Gunduz (21), are ready to participate IDFA 2011 next week as part of the Doc Next filmmakers group that will take part in the IDFAcademy and all related events. Nazli’s film “Ebb and Tide” is among the ten short Doc Next documentaries that will be screened at IDFA 2011 prior to the feature length films. Two other films from Turkey, “Ece’esque” (dir. Ozge Yesilcimen, Bora Balbey, Bade Selcuk, Caner Kececi) and “Dear Brother Sakir” (dir. Bahar Demirkan, Okyar Igli, Hayati Kose and Morteza Moghaddam), which were made during Youth MODE Workshops, will be screened at IDFA’s Doc Next Mini Cinema section featuring continual screenings of a selection from the Doc Next Media Collection.

Nazli is an awarded animator/director/designer working and studying in Prague. Nazli’s productions focus on important themes such as immigration, food security and personal freedom. Her biggest ambition in life is to make creative, innovative and inspiring short animated films and documentaries that address social and environmental issues. Her dream is to open an animation studio in Prague and Istanbul that will create socially and environmentally concerned ‘green’ films.” Her film in IDFA 2011 program “Ebb and Tide” is about a young woman reading from her diaries about her life in the Czech Republic while showing the life of her parents, who also temporarily immigrated to another country. As an interpretation of home videos made on S8, the film’s emotionally charged story challenges the existing imagery of Turkish people living in Europe. Nazli’s awarded animation documenaries “Zlin Soup” and “Nazli in Zlin” are also in the Doc Next Media Collection. She is currently working on a new ‘green’ film “The Seed”.

Selin is an aspiring DIY filmmaker with tremendous self-motivation. She did not attend university nor did she receive formal media education, but she pushes herself to learn more about filmmaking, screenwriting, photography and acting by attending certificate programs, workshops and seminars. Selin participated the Youth MODE Documentary Workshop in Canakkale last year and made the film “Sounds and Shadows“, also included in the Doc Next Media Collection,
with fellow workshop participants Erkan Atay, Ahmet Turan and Alper Dutkin. “To me, filmmaking is not a temporary interest. It has captured me completely. I want to build my life on it, I am saving money by working other jobs in order to make films and also to attend screenings and other film related events,” says Selin, who now works on the script for her new short film and is preparing a documentary on internet censorship in Turkey.

We wish both ladies the best of time at IDFAcademy and we are also very excited to be joining them in Amsterdam next week!

Last session of Poland.doc

At the last session we discussed our projects. We spoke to experts about issues such as preparing a budget for a photography project, talking to commissioning editors, who order documentary films for TV stations, which young film festivals are worth attending, preparing one’s portfolio and using Internet for promotion of your work. During the Ideas Market participants could ask the advice of: Barbara Webel (Kino Polska, tv channel), Anna Wydra (Otter Films, production company), Anna Bierzańska (Dragon Forum, documentary development academy), Joanna Kinowska (Zachęta National Gallery), Tomasz Gutowski (Photography Month in Krakow) and Witek Orski (Czułość Gallery).

The last session also provided an occasion to share our experiences from the holiday workshops we held for kids and youth around Poland.

At the end we put our practical skills in to practice by creating a short video spot.

Now comes the time for making last changes in our film and photographic projects. We edit, put photography series together. The effects will be published in mid-October.

Exciting News from a BFI Video Art Bursary Winner

Some exciting news has been brought to our attention from mentor on the Video Art Bursary scheme here at the BFI, Phillip Warnell. Jacob Dwyer, who is a BFI Video Art Bursary Winner, was successful in being offered a place to study the brand new MA Experimental Film course at KingstonUniversity, London, which starts in October 2011. Jacob, who graduated Newcastle University this summer with an outstanding 1^st Class Honours degree in Fine Art, was then nominated by Phillip, who is also the director of studies on the course at KingstonUniversity, for an AHRX bursary to help him pursue this MA programme. Wonderfully he was successful in obtaining it. This bursary will cover his fees and maintenance costs for the duration of the one-year course.

Phillip added that he was “delighted that Jacob has been offered the opportunity, both in joining the MA Experimental Film programme atKingston, and in gaining such an award. His film work undoubtedly merits his success”.

Congratulations and good luck on the course Jacob!

Op 4 juli start de IDFA Summerschool 2011. Naar aanleiding daarvan presenteert IDFA TV een speciaal themaprogramma rondom creative, jonge talenten. Het programma bestaat uit acht documentaires die de afgelopen jaren in de IDFA Competition for Student Documentary te zien zijn geweest. De documentaires zijn allemaal gratis te bekijken.

Het programma bestaat o.a. uit de documentaires What’s in a Name (Eva Küpper – winnaar van de IDFA Competition for Student Documentary 2010), Du Soleil en Hiver (Samuel Collardey – geselecteerd voor de IDFA Competition for Student Documentary 2006), en Paradise – Three Journeys in this World (Elina Hirvonen – winnaar van de IDFA Competition for Student Documentary 2007).

Doc Next @ Documentarist 2011

With the initiative of MODE Istanbul, a 50-minute long short documentary film selection from the Doc Next Network media collection, including films completed at Youth MODE Media Workshops, will be screened at Documentarist 2011 Istanbul Documentary Days on Thursday June 2nd, 2011, at 18:00 in Sismanoglio Megaro venue in Beyoglu, Istanbul. Following the screening, a talk will be held with the participating young media-makers, instructors and MODE Istanbul representative about their past and current projects.
