During IDFA 2011, ten do-it-yourself media makers attend the IDFAcademy. These Doc Next makers attend a special programme, including special workshops by Condition ONE and Metropolis TV. These workshops are for Doc Next participants only!
CONDITION ONE / Part 1 (workshop): Friday 18 November, 1230 – 1500, Compagnie Theater, Kleine Zaal / Part 2 (case study): Sunday 20 November, 1230 – 1500, Compagnie Theater, Kleine Zaal (during New Media + Digital Storytelling).
About Condition ONE
Condition ONE is reinventing photojournalism into a full-immersion, virtual reality experience. The iPad app Condition ONE was developed by photojournalist Danfung Dennis to re-engage the audience with the realities that he and his colleagues were revealing. Instead of capturing the world in flat photographic images, the Condition ONE team uses a custom camera system, fusing the ethics, method and aesthetics of photojournalism with the tradition of filmmaking and virtual reality.
These experiences can be viewed as stand-alone items or as a series of clips, accessed by theme or by author. Holding the tablet, the user is put at the center of the action – whether it’s at a bloody conflict in pre-revolutionary Libya or during a chaotic police arrest on the streets of New Orleans. Tilting the tablet tilts the camera accordingly, allowing users to choose which area of the 360-degree image they want to look at.

About Metropolis TV
Metropolis has a worldwide correspondent network of over 70 correspondents that weekly show remarkable practices from daily life in their country. Every week Metropolis discusses a subject with global significance. What’s it like to be gay in Kenya? How do people deal with alcohol in the States, Peru and South Africa? How do you raise a child in South Africa or Japan?
Metropolis is a globally produced website and TV show initiated by Dutch public service broadcaster VPRO. Metropolis has a radically different approach towards reporting from around the world: all of the stories are produced by local filmmakers that are continuously exploring their surroundings and capturing remarkable stories from everyday life.

What
In this workshop called 21st century window on the world Metropolis wants to share with you the work of their correspondents and their experiences with working on a global scale but more importantly: give you the opportunity to become part of our correspondent network!
As Metropolis’ reporters always pitch stories on the subjects provided by the editors, they want you to do the same on the spot. Below you can find a list of themes for the upcoming season that are still open for pitching. Please prepare yourself by thinking about possible stories and matching characters from your country that fit into one of the themes. Bring them with you to the workshop and our editors will discuss all proposals in groups to eventually chose two stories that can be produced on paid commission.
Look here for examples of top stories: Becoming an adult in Nicaragua and Hygiene in Kenya.
Prepare yourself for this workshop and read List of topics and Quick guide to a successful Metropolis report
